History of Panos

In 1974, Jon Tinker started Earthscan as part of the International Institute for Environment & Development, UK. In 1986 the organisation became fully-independent under the Panos name, when three autonomous institutes were created in London, Paris and Washington DC.

The widely-respected Panos Network now includes organisations based in the Caribbean, Eastern Africa, London, Paris, South Asia, Southern Africa, and West Africa, with a combined staff of well over 100 people. There is a Panos Network liaison office in Washington DC.

Panos Canada was formed with the encouragement of Panos Paris, and shares some of its strategic goals, including working for a strengthened latinité within the Panos network. Panos Canada also has close bilateral connections with Panos Caribbean, especially on HIV/AIDS.
