The Panos Canada vision

To work in Canada and internationally towards more sustainable human development, greater human security and peacebuilding. To these ends, to help strengthen plural media and civil society, and to help raise public understanding of critical global issues.

What does "panos" mean?

Panos was first known as "Earthscan", which proved unpronounceable to many non-British tongues. The word "panos" describes a torch or beacon in the Doric version of classical Greek. In modern Greek, Panos is a common diminutive form of Peter. Today, in Nepali a panas is an oil lamp around which people gather to discuss important issues, and in Amharic the word means a torch. The prefix pan means all or universal in modern English, and words derived from the Latin panis mean bread in many European languages.

Organization

Panos Canada was registered in October 2003 as a federal not-for-profit organisation under the Canada Corporations Act (file 419108-1). A Canadian NGO working internationally, it is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Panos Canada works closely with the Panos Foundation of Canada, registered charity 80494 7471 RR0001.

The Canadian dimension

Working both in Canada and internationally, Panos seeks to mobilise the rich resources of Canada's civil society, and to reflect some key aspects of the Canadian identity and of Canada's international posture. These characteristics include diversity, consensus and multi-culturalism; a respect for First Nations; a concern for international justice, peacebuilding and human security; and an equal respect for French-speaking and English-speaking cultures.

Funding

Panos Canada accepts general support funding, or funding earmarked for a specific programme or project, but not funding which limits its editorial independence or involves the endorsement of a funder’s policies.

Panos is grateful for recent financial support or contracts from the BC Ministry for Healthy Living & Sport, City of Vancouver, Finnish Department for International Development Cooperation (DIDC), Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), Human Security Report Project, Panos Global AIDS Programme (GAP), RBC Foundation, Simon Fraser University, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), UK Department for International Development (DFID), University of British Columbia and private donors.
